“I have enjoyed studying Economics because it has helped me to answer big questions about the way society operates, such as why some people are ‘lucky’ financially, and what can we do to redistribute income. I feel confident that I can use economic principles to make a positive impact on the world around me. We started the week off by revisiting the concept of productivity from the last lesson. We worked in groups and discussed the usefulness of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in defining UK productivity and, after further research, we answered a typical exam question on the subject.

We also looked at budget decisions made by The Chancellor of the Exchequer and considered what they mean for individuals and the UK economy. The resulting debate was really interesting as we were able to talk about theories we’d previously covered in class. A guest speaker from the Bank of England talked to us about the role of central banks and how interest rates and money can be used to help grow the economy, as well as talking about the careers available for Economists at the Bank. In other weeks, we looked at key exam skills, taking part in competitions like the Royal Economic Society essay competition and the real-life application of economics, such as analysing football results and ticket-touting.”
