“One of the stand-out moments of my journey at Xaverian College has been recognising how much I have grown in confidence and independence since starting College. Through my studies in Health & Social Care, I have developed new knowledge improved my communication skills and become more certain about my future career path in nursing. On the ‘Person-centred Approach to Care’ module, we look at how to prioritise an individual’s needs, preferences and values in the health and social care sector and then we compete our work placement to put into practice the theory we have learnt. Whilst on the placement, we take part in an observed one-to-one and group interaction, which we reflect on in terms of our own skills.

Last week, we learnt about the composition and function of blood which will enable us to check and take our own blood pressure, as well as learn about peak flow and oxygen Levels. We have been given an assignment to write about the effect on the human body of different blood conditions and their treatments. Guest speakers come into College to give us talks on their experiences of working in the care sector and the various careers open to us. ‘Dementia Friends’ came in recently to raise awareness of Dementia and the opportunities available for fundraising and volunteering to support those affected by the condition.”
